October 19th / 20th, 2024

How good was it to get back out on the field? Despite the at-times shaky weather, most games were able to proceed and there's plenty of highlights to share. I'm sure there were a few cobwebs to be dusted off after the winter but regardless of performances and results, it's fantastic to get out on the park and get the season underway! We hope everyone had an enjoyable experience and please get in touch at leichhardtcricket@gmail.com if you need any support.

Match Reports

U11 Girls: LWCC (135) def. Summer Hill CC (72)

Under 11 girls have a brand-new team and were sent into bat on an overcast afternoon at Blackmore Oval. Emily bowled the first over with 6 absolute rocket deliveries and our bowlers continued this pressure all through the Summer Hill innings. Emilie and Ella both took 2 wickets. Elsie took the field despite a bad hand injury and bowled 3 of her best overs. Everyone bowled brilliantly conceding only 72 runs. Our batting was equally consistent with Mihrimah, Adelaide and Lucia topping the scoring. Emily’s running between the wickets was outstanding. Zosia also hit some nice shots and we made 135, winning by over 60 runs. A brilliant first game!

U12: LWCC Gold (8/249) def. LWCC Red (8/121)

In a pulsating start to the new season, LWCC U12 Gold and LWCC U12 Red faced off in an exciting match filled with strong individual performances and great team spirit between both teams. Under blue skies the Gold team took to the crease first, with opener Will Barratt playing a solid and measured innings of 15 runs. His calm approach set a steady foundation for what would become a fantastic display of batting from the middle order.

The highlight of the day undoubtedly belonged to Connor Bubb, who delivered a sensational innings. After retiring after facing 30 balls, Connor returned to the crease later in the innings and finished with an outstanding 94 runs. His innings was a quality display of power and precision, smashing 12 fours and a massive six. His 94 runs came off just 54 balls an impressive strike rate of 174. His innings had the crowd on their feet multiple times, a true masterclass of junior cricket.

Other notable batting contributions came from Oscar Green, who scored a commendable 36 off 30 balls, showcasing his ability to keep the scoreboard ticking with intelligent stroke play. Patrick Thornton followed with a quickfire 21 off just 15 balls, whilst Grayson Cranny achieved his highest-ever score with a smooth 29 not out off 30 balls, adding depth to the innings. Together, the Gold team posted a competitive total that put them in a strong position at the change of innings.

On the bowling front, LWCC Gold delivered a true team performance, with wickets shared among seven different bowlers. Patrick Thornton stood out with the best figures of the innings of 2/9. LWCC Red, despite facing a challenging target, put up a valiant fight and kept the scoreboard ticking over with strong batting and sensible shot selection. Wonderful to see both LWCC teams displaying great sportsmanship throughout the match. The camaraderie and mutual respect on the field were evident, as both teams played the game the way with true sportsmanship.

A great start to the season with both teams filled with great potential and likely two successful seasons ahead.

U17: LWCC Black (9/151) def. Concord Briars Black (99)

The U17 Black very much enjoyed their first game on turf, at Marrickville Oval, against old rivals, Concord. We are very pleased to welcome, Elijah to a team that is otherwise full of familiar faces; Max and Leo opening the batting, and Ethan the bowling, in their 8th season together. Cameron was man of the match with an unbeaten, big-hitting debut 50, followed by the removal of the Concord opener with his first ball. The spinners then went to work, with Tom, Will and then Nick taking 7 wickets between them, for not many runs, to ensure we started the season with a fine victory.

U11: LWCC Red (82) def. by LWCC White (110)

First game of the season in a new level and longer format for our boys..

James Murphy was delegated to be captain, won the toss, and elected to bat. He went on to take two wickets from his three overs. Our new recruit, Sebastion O’Neil took second stint at wicket keeper and did really well stopping any loose deliveries and even scored his first run out, which was pleasing as he has not even worn the keeper gloves previously. Jack Bastick was also solid at the wicket keeper spot giving the back stop little to do, Jack also batted without losing his wicket, he has become quite consistent (from last year and the winter comp) at not giving up his wicket and solid is scoring singles for his deliveries faced.

The boys played well overall but unfortunately were too casual with their batting and rather than blocking out the good deliveries they opened the face and took too many wild swing s– many got clean bowled.

This week will be focused on bowling straighter and batting to block out the good deliveries and I expect the boys to adjust to the longer format and get used to running the pitch in full pads and helmet which some of the boys struggled with

Congrats to LWCC White, they deserved the win!

Also a thank you to the U11 Red, particularly their coach, who helped the Whites with some assistance in umpiring and game management. Lots of help from parents on both sides also made for a really enjoyable morning. Fantastic club spirit on display!

U11: LWCC Black (130) def. Iron Cover Tigers (76)

Leichhardt Wanderers Under 11 Black had a great start to the season against Iron Cove Balmain Tigers at Callan Park. Winning the toss and electing to bat on a greasy service with a damp outfield in spots, Felix and Dashiell opened strongly to set the tone. They put on a 41 run partnership without loss, Dashiell hitting a game high 25 including 5 fours. But the most notable moment of the match was when (in his first game) Curtis Jones took a wicket first ball of the innings with a left arm in-swinger that jagged off the seam and caught the top off. His natural bowing action hints at a promising future and makes his coaches look good. Curtis built on this achievement by taking a good catch at mid-off and earlier even hit a five! (single with 4 overthrows). Special mention also to Toby who showed bravery getting in behind the ball against some hostile fast bowling in his first go at holding bat. Well played LWCC Under 11 Black!
