Round 10 Wrap | Summer BBQ

leichhardtcricket

February 1st / 2nd, 2025

Welcome back to all our families, and for our new families, welcome to Leichhardt Wanderers!

A massive summer of cricket is behind us, with two huge series wins by the Australian women's and men's teams! The women completed a historic 'whitewash' in the multi-format Ashes series, whilst the men dominated India to win 3-1, in a thrilling test series. Also, congratulations to the Hobart Hurricanes on their maiden BBL men's title (unfortunately taking care of both Sydney teams in the process!). I personally watched way too much cricket over the summer break, to the detriment of all my other responsibilities!

We hope to see everyone down at the Blackmore Clubhouse on Friday as we enjoy the best of the summer weather, as a club and community. Our brand new Summer Pop-up Blast Skills sessions also commence this Friday afternoon and we warmly welcome all new players and their families to the club!

A massive weekend wrap follows below, with plenty of fantastic photos and achievements to celebrate. Happy reading!

P.S. stay tuned for a separate special edition newsletter, as we wrap up our involvement in the Sydney Sixers Belong Bash Fund for 2024-25 with a nice surprise for the club (hint: it contains an oversize novelty cheque).

*Important Update* Date Change for Rep Cricket Virtual Info Session

Due to a late scheduling clash, we have had to change the date for our virtual info session, "Rep Cricket & Transitioning Beyond Junior Cricket". We have now moved this from Monday 10th February to Monday 17th February, though it remains at 7:30pm to 8:30pm.

This session should be highly useful for all families within the club, especially those with younger players who may not have contemplated rep cricket. The session will provide insights into the system and how to prepare yourself for trials and possible selection.

*Free* registration is required - please click HERE to register now.

Around The Grounds: Highlights & Match Reports

Performance of the Round

Conor Truong (U13 Gold) - 70* (45 balls). A blistering innings with the bat from Conor Truong in the first game for the newly-formed U13 Gold team (playing Summer SCL on Sundays). This innings included 6x fours, 4x sixes and 1x lost ball in the bushes at Arthur Walker Reserve (prompting an army of spectators standing at cow corner ready to intercept any future shots before travelling into the scrub).

Highlights

Highlights this week are dominated by the club's fielding efforts, which is extremely pleasing to see - we have four new additions to the fielding honour roll!

  • Charlotte Williams (U13 Girls) - 3 for 3 (off 3 overs), plus a run out

  • Kiran Chandramouli (U10 Black) - 3 catches, 1 run out, 3 for 2 (off 3 overs)

  • Oscar Rawson (U10 Black) - 3 for 4 (off 4 overs)

  • Archie Buckley (U10 Red) - 4 run outs, 1 catch (wow!)

  • Rohan Mahalingam (U10 Red) - 3 run outs

  • Eleanor Rhodes (U15 Girls) - 3 run outs

  • Vincent Gardner (U15 White) - 43* (37 balls), 6x fours

  • Dilhan Clark (U11 Black) - 3 for 6 (3 overs), 16* (15 balls), 2x fours

Match Reports

U13 Girls: LWCC (3-111) def. Randwick Juniors Daredevils (6-79)

We won the Toss and elected to bat. It was great to see many of our girls carrying their bat to retirement. Connie Rawson top scored with 25 not out followed by Charlotte Williams 13 runs off only 12 balls and retired. Cate Timpany played a great little cameo with 10 runs not out. Bravery award goes to Olivia McInerney retired not out, notwithstanding that she became ill and had to be taken home for care. Reports were that she was in bed asleep before the second drinks break but doing well.

Coming out to bowl, Charlotte Williams took a wicket off the second ball of the innings to a terrific catch by Eva Karakaidos. Eva then followed up with a second catch in the second over from a terrific wicket maiden over by Sofia Robinson. It was nail biting, but a Carmen Winter catch off the bowling of Sofia Cavallaro in the 16th started to turn the tide. But the nail in the coffin was an outstanding performance from Charlotte Williams 3 overs 3 wickets for only 3 runs and no extras. If that was enough with her performance with the bat she finished it off with a direct hit runout. Congratulations team a great start to the summer comp!

U11 Gold: LWCC (132) def. Iron Cove Balmain Tigers (119)

The U11 Boys Gold Team had the opportunity to return to winning ways against Iron Cove Tigers on Saturday morning. And take that opportunity they did. As coach it was pretty pleasing in that everyone contributed to this win. It's a sign of their growing confidence and maturity that the boys seem to really be thinking about the game now, and thinking of tactics and how to improve.

Dhilan and Isaac experimenting with changing up the pace and trying new lines on attack on bowlers.

There were lots of straight bats from Jack and Harry to defend those good balls, but still punishing the bad ones (2 massive sixes for Harry, plus a wicket and catches and run outs for Player of the Match!),

Liam and Xavier seem to have developed hyper mobility over the summer - some of their spinners were moving a *lot* sideways, even on an Astro-turf wicket, and both took valuable wickets through this and use of flight. They just need to avoid rugby tackling each other on quick singles.

Luciano also has been hitting the gym it appears, and showed a lot of power - 2 cracking 4s, and was almost a third for his best score of the season.

Elliot also kept incredibly well - with minimal byes - and showed a cool head and some excellent fielding ability to run out a number of batters.

So a true team victory and back onto winning ways - well done everyone, and onto next week!

U10 Black: LWCC (152) def. Concord Briars Maroon (55)

We won the toss and sent the opposition into bat. Restricting the Briars to 55 runs was magnificent. Congratulations to Zane Henderson for his first wicket in club cricket, the work you did over the Xmas break was evident. 3 wickets each to Oscar Rawson, Kiran Chandramouli, and Fredrick Werner-Gibbings. Freddy off 2 overs without any extras was the pick of the bowlers. Kiran Chandramouli was the player of the match along with his 3 wickets including a C&B, 2 other catches and a RO. Henry Radford was tight with only 2 runs off his 2 overs. As was Ryan Petkovich only conceding 2 runs off his 2 overs and picking up a handy wicket. The wickets kept coming as John O'Connell & Emmett Hudson collected 2 wickets each. John O'Connell & Emmett Hudson top scored with 19 and 18 respectively. The 'coach pleaser' was that we did not have any runouts.

Well done team, a great effort and you played with wonderful spirit and respect for cricket.

U10 Red: LWCC Red (160) def. Concord Briars Blue (123)

Back to the Cricket after the summer break with a deserved win!

LWCC U10 Red opened the batting and saw contributions across the team, with Sam Kelliher top scoring with 15. This was despite some very fast bowling from Jaideep Cherukoori on the Briars team, taking 3 wickets. A first innings total of 94 had the game evenly poised.

It was in the field that the LWCC U10 Red demonstrated how far they have come this season as a team: 16 wickets, contributing to 64 penalty runs, that saw them out comfortable winners. This is despite the 1st Six of the season being scored by the Briars. Wickets were shared round on the bowling side, Archie, Sam, Alex, Finn (1 wicket and a maiden over – proving that all that practice in the garage does pay off!!) Jeremy (2) all showing improvement. However, it was the team fielding where they excelled this week with 10 run outs, Rohan (3), Jeremy (1), Archie (4 – however Richard Kelliher sharing one run out with his advice on positioning from the sidelines!!!), Finn (2). Some great takes, throws and covering at the wicket delivering a great team performance and deserved win!!!

U15 Girls: LWCC (73) def. by Concord Briars Gold (139)

Despite losing, the girls had some real positives to draws from as they blew off the Christmas cobwebs. Although giving away a few too many runs they bowled out the Briars girls with some excellent bowling from Beth Coughlin, a great caught and bowled from Ellen Winning and 2 wickets and 3 run-outs from Eleanor Rhodes.

Chasing 139 was always going to be tough but another strong 29 off 22 for Beth Coughlin had the girls in the game for a while but they fell 66 short.

Big shout out to Claire Mather who was able to struggle through illness to open the batting.

U15 White: LWCC (9-152) def. by Concord Briars Black (7-176)

A competitive top of the table clash against Concord Briars to start 2025. Unfortunately, the result didn't go our way but the team were positive and keen to build on lessons learnt to secure future wins. The boys bowled well with Beau Williams (2/19) and Nick Mabbott (2/14) picking up two wickets each. Batting-wise, Jack Phillips (16) and James Garland (26*) had a solid opening partnership and Vinnie Gardiner's big hitting (43*) included six 4s. The difference today was a few too many extras and the need to up the run rate.

U13 Gold: LWCC (6-171) def. Concord Briars Maroon (8-22)

The U13 Gold had their first game of the Summer Season in the Sixers comp on Sunday morning on a damp Arthur Walker Reserve. A team thrown together from three other Wanderers teams from the Saturday U13 IWHJCA comp, plus two new players to the club (Larson and Felix), were ably led by Eamon. Briars Maroon were the opposition.

The toss was won and it was decided to bat, knowing the ball would get very wet early and cause problems for seam bowlers and be difficult to catch.

The batting was controlled to perfection by the team. Big hitter Conor and the very steady Max got the scoring underway. Conor, Jacob, Archer, Yoris, Larsen and Felix each faced 20+ balls and made the tally increase steadily. Conor came back in for the last few overs, after retiring earlier, and ended up with a bruising 70 n.o. off 45 balls. This complete team effort resulted in an impressive 171.

The bowling was opened by leg spinner Jacob and seamer Linus. Jacob conceded three runs of his three overs. Linus bagged two wickets of his three overs. The first change bombarded the Briars with more seam from Eamon and Yoris and saw three more wickets in four overs. Eamon had a hat trick ball but pushed it too wide and the batter was able to leave it alone. The second change saw Archer and Max get the remaining three wickets. Archer, with two wickets in the last two balls of the game, remains on a hat trick so we all look forward to his first ball in the next game. The Briars were dealt with for just 22 runs.

U17 Black: LWCC (101) def. by Randwick Juniors Stars (4-131)

The U17 Black welcomed back Gus Cassim and congratulated him on scoring his first ever century. Unfortunately, the achievement came for UNSW on Saturday, rather than Wanderers on Sunday, but we’re all still delighted for Gus. We also welcomed back Ethan and Leo from injury and send our best wishes to the newly injured Cameron and Tom. Next year we’ll be requesting a large quantity of cotton wool in our team kit.

At Kensington Oval, the Stars won the toss and batted. The outfield was slow, and the Wanderers’ bowling was controlled, so scoring was difficult. However, the Stars kept wickets in hand, allowing a steady acceleration and the posting of a competitive score of 131. The returning Leo was the pick of the Wanderers team, posting the most economical figures and taking a comfortable catch.

Unlike the Stars, the Wanderers lost wickets at a fairly steady pace before drinks, with the disciplined Max the only player able to retire and return. A defiant 8th wicket stand between Nick and top-scorer Ethan kept hope alive, but the total remained beyond the Wanderers and the Stars took the deserved victory.

U12 Red: LWCC (6-115) def. Concord Briars Gold (5-112)

Ancient rivals Concord put to the sword?! Could this be right? The boys were certainly back in town Saturday, ~8:20am @ St Luke’s, and unleashed their new found skills and kit against their skillful (and only slightly numerically depleted) opponents to great effect. The opening bowling was tight and menacing, Charlie’s early wicket setting the tone for a long attritional middle innings, with some excellent all round fielding keeping things tight. Then Noah’s decision to focus on his ripping leggies over keeping was well rewarded, drawing edges and ultimately a brilliant / reflex catch in the slips from James, off Leo as keeper. James continued cooking with two more wickets, with tidy catches to Jordan and Ted and noticeably quicker bowling from Leon leaving the very gettable target of 112.

And get it they did, the top order firing nicely with the Mayes, Charlie, Ollie S, Leo, Ted ‘six first ball’ and chief cook James all showcasing skills drawn from a solid 6 weeks of BBL and test cricket against a skillful set of bowlers. There was a slight rally from Concord Gold after drinks but with some timely extras it was time for Jordan to ramp and then Charlie to whack the winning 4. Glory!

U11 Black / Red: LWCC Black (115) def. LWCC Red (45)

LWCC U11 Black won the toss against U11 Red and elected to bat on a greasy service. Opting against a Konstas-style approach, openers Dashiell Collier and Felix Hagen began cautiously, choosing instead to counter tight bowling with solid defence (as opposed to reverse ramps). Next, an enterprising partnership from Caleb Rohanek and Dilhan Clark changed the tempo as they shifted through the gears quickly to combine for 24 runs. Some late hitting and aggressive running, particularly in the last over from Rufus Shemmell and Curtis Jenkins brought us to a respectable total of 73. The coach was absolutely thrilled that despite some good bowling, U11 Black did not lose a single wicket!

Defense of the total started well as the players tried their first go at bowling spells, rather than rotating with an over at a time. It seemed to work well with great rhythm achieved, most notably from Toby Maher and Dilhan, the later hitting the stumps 3 times with his leg spin! After keeping admirably, Dashiell took 2/6 off his 3 overs including a caught and bowled with some skillful off-spin. This earned him the prized game ball for the week as he contributed well to an 80 run win. Moment of the match goes to Louis Lecoanet who had an impressive runout with a direct hit from backstop. LWCC U11 Black plan to use the bye next week to enjoy a parents vs kids game. Well played both Leichhardt teams!

U13 Black: LWCC (3-59) def. RHH Pirates Black Beards (8-56)

LWCC won the toss and bowled first at Westminster Park, Hunters Hill. Excellent bowling spell from Xavier Rohanek 2 for 1 off 3 overs, showing off some good bounce and aggressive bowling. Supported well by Linus Starkoff with some tight bowling and wicket in his final over. Wickets to Noah Kelly (2 for 4 from 2), Lachlan Ash (2 for 1 from 1) and Sam Spiller 1 from 3 overs. Black Beards were reduced to 8-56 after just 17 overs. Good catches and fielding contributed to an excellent start. Harrison Burke (2), Barnabas Ford, Lachlan Ash and Sam Spiller all claiming good catches.

Batting had it’s usual sense of mystery chasing low totals including a Golden Duck, 20 (25) to Barnabas Ford, 17 (21) to Ronav Auti, 7 (4) to Linus Starkoff, 8 (3) to Xavier Rohanek and the winning runs hit by Sam Spiller (4 from 2). The umpires and scorers only just had time to settle in when it was all over in 8.5 overs. In wonderful cricket spirit we shared a BBQ hosted by the Black Beards. A great day for all, albeit quite quick. A few players didn’t even get to bat or bowl today, so some rotations are in order for next week. Everyone enjoyed the win a great way to start back to cricket.

Coaching hot-tip - Do not tell the facing batter they only have 2 to win. Didn’t work out. LOL.

U12 Gold: LWCC (82) def. by Concord Briars Maroon (6-83)

Leichhardt Wanderers U12 Gold returned from the Christmas break eager to kick off the new year with a strong performance against Concord Briars Maroon. Captain Harry Johnson won the toss and elected to bat, with the team looking to post a competitive total. Patrick Thornton was the standout with the bat, crafting a composed 30 from 42 deliveries, including three boundaries. However, wickets fell at regular intervals, with Briars' bowlers, keeping the scoring in check. Contributions from Will Barratt (11) and Oscar Green (8) helped push the total to 82 in 23.2 overs, leaving the game finely poised at the halfway mark.

Defending a modest total, LWCC U12 Gold's bowlers made early inroads, with Will Barratt (2/10 from 5 overs) and Patrick Thornton (2/11) delivering excellent spells to keep the pressure on the Briars' top order. As wickets tumbled, the match tightened, Briars found themselves needing a steady approach to chase down the target. Despite a late breakthrough from Archer Gannon, Briars played cautiously in the final overs to secure a narrow victory at 6/83 in 27.2 overs. It was a hard-fought contest to restart the season, setting the stage for an exciting second half of the summer.

U13 White: LWCC (8-98) def. by RHH Pirates Swashbucklers (3-99)

The woes continue for the U13 Whites with another loss, notwithstanding a hefty amount of promise and fighting spirit in every game. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat. The ever-reliable opener Darcy again earned a retirement and later came back to the crease to finish not out. A blistering 28 off 20 for Conor pushed the runs along early. However, a steady stream of wickets and a slowing run rate kept us to a modest 98 runs and we were bowled out in the 25th over. The lack of quick singles and some questionable running between wickets ("yes, no, wait, yes, no, uh oh...") a consistent thorn in our batting - a heavy focus for training this week.

Our early bowling innings kept us in the game, with a brilliant opening spell by Oli setting the stage for a tense run chase. Oli has bowled consistently well all season but with little reward in terms of wickets, however today was his day, as he collected 3 for only 8 runs off his three overs. Two brilliant catches off faint edges by wicket keeper Yoris was accompanied by Oli clean bowling his rep team mate, Jasper, from RHH. A lovely display of off-spin bowling from Jack kept us fighting, as the run rate slowed significantly - his line and length was perfect. Ultimately though, we didn't have enough runs to defend and the Pirates took the win in the 20th over.

I admire our team's spirit despite the solitary win this season - this will certainly earn them more wins, let alone the good it does for their individual game. Crack on boys!

Have a fantastic week, train hard and we'll hopefully see you on Friday at the clubhouse!

Best,

Chris Hudson

LWCC President
