leichhardtcricket

January 12th, 2025

Happy new year to the Leichhardt Wanderers cricket community! We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas and New Year and are possibly enjoying some holidays! Whilst I'm sure everyone is enjoying the break from playing cricket, there's been no shortage of amazing cricket to watch over the summer so far!

Whilst our seniors (B and D grade) teams resumed their competitions yesterday (both with a win to start 2025!), a reminder that all junior competitions resume the weekend of 1st & 2nd February.

However, in addition to this, please note this e-mail contains some important information that may require your action. A summary is below, please jump to the relevant section further below so you don't miss out on any opportunities!

  • Rep Cricket & Transitioning Beyond Junior Cricket - Virtual Info Session

  • Follow-on options for Friday Blast cricketers:

    • Expressions of Interest for new U8s Blast team (played Saturday mornings at Boronia Park)

    • Pop-Up Blast! New Friday afternoon Blast 6-week program.

    • School Holiday Bash - 6-hour skills program at Blackmore Oval, this Tuesday, 14th January (9am to 3pm).

  • Expressions of Interest for second U11s All-Girls team - Sixers Cricket League

  • Expressions of Interest for U13s / U15s Summer Comp (played on Sundays) - Sixers Cricket League

  • Save the date! LWCC Presentation Night - Saturday, 3rd May 2025.

Given the shorter-than-usual window we had this season for our beer sales event in December (pre-Christmas), we have now extended our Wayward Beer Sales Event for the rest of January!

Sales are open now via the link below and will close on Tuesday, 28th January at 10pm. Pick up for new sales will be 9am-10am on Sunday, 2nd February, from the storeroom at Blackmore Oval (I will be there to hand out orders).

Rep Cricket & Transitioning Beyond Junior Cricket

Monday 10th February via Zoom. Time 7:30pm

Aimed at parents/guardians of our junior players (both girls and boys), this virtual information session has been designed to introduce parents to representative level cricket - including the Inner West Harbour Junior Cricket Association - as well as options for transitioning beyond junior cricket.

We are lucky enough to be able to present insights and guidance from IWHCA's representative cricket coordinator for this session.

This session is designed to help parents/guardians gain an insight into the rep selection process, how to prepare young players for rep trials and the potential rep season - including undertaking private coaching - plus manage expectations of players with potential, whilst adhering to the Association's Code of Conduct for Rep Cricket. We will also provide information on pathways for cricket beyond the junior club level.

The Zoom link will be shared with registrants prior to the session, though please note, only one rego is required per family if you wish for others to listen in!

Blast Program: What Next? Follow-On Options

If your child participated in our Friday Blast Skills Program in 2024, you will have received an e-mail with details of your possible next steps. This could include any of the following options:

  • Cricket NSW is running a one-day 'Sixers Holiday Bash' skills day on 14 January 2025 at Blackmore Oval in Leichhardt. Suitable for those new to cricket, aged 4 to 10 years. The program will run for 6 hours, cost is $49. More details and registration at https://www.sydneysixers.com.au/school-holidays.

  • LWCC is running a 6-week 'Blast Pop-Up' skills development program on Friday afternoons from 7 February 2025, 4.15pm to 5.30pm. Also suitable for those new to cricket or looking to build their technical skills, ages up to 7 years. Registration is $75 and includes a participant pack (drink bottle, shoulder bag and ball). Register now here.

  • For those ready to take the next step and join a Blast cricket team, we're seeking expressions of interest for potential players and a volunteer coach for a team (or teams) to play in the U8 Blast competition, held on Saturday mornings during February and March:

    • Games on Saturdays at 8.30am starting on Saturday 1 February, final playing date is Saturday 22 March 2025.

    • All games at one venue, Boronia Park in Hunters Hill.

    • Introductory T12 game format (24 overs in total, approx. 1.5hrs), played against teams from other clubs.

    • 6-8 players per team.

    • Training is at Blackmore Oval in Leichhardt for one hour, one afternoon each week (date and time to be confirmed).

    • Registration cost is $135, which includes Blast pack.

    • Interested? Please respond by Thursday 16 January. If we have sufficient interest for a team (plus a volunteer coach) then we will open registration via PlayHQ with a quick turnaround to be ready for the re-start of the season on 1 February.

  • Join an all-girls U11 team - more details below!

Further information about our various offerings is available on our website: About Us or on the Cricket Hub.

U11 Girls - Expressions of Interest

LWCC are always very keen to ensure we continue to grow girls participation in cricket, hence we are seeking expressions of interest for any girls who would like to form a (second) U11s all-girls team (playing on Saturday afternoons during February and March). This could be suitable for girls (aged 8+) who participated in Friday Blast in 2024 and want to take the next step in their cricket, or perhaps you can recruit a friend from school to join?

We will need enough players to form a second team, as well as volunteer coach and manager (or better yet, multiple people volunteering to share these responsibilities!).

E-mails have been sent to all relevant parents: please respond by Thursday, 16th January if you are interested.

Further information about our various offerings is available on our website: About Us or on the Cricket Hub.

U13 / U15 Sunday Mixed Teams - Expressions of Interest

The Sixers Cricket League summer competitions are commencing from Sunday 2nd February. We are seeking expressions of interest for players in either U13s or U15s who would be interested in forming a team. This option is often available for those who may have had representative cricket commitments on Sundays in 2024 but wish to continue to play on Sundays for the summer.

E-mails have been sent to all relevant parents: please respond by Thursday, 16th January if you are interested.

Further information about our various offerings is available on our website: About Us or on the Cricket Hub.

Save the Date - LWCC Presentation Night!

Our annual end-of-season presentation event will be held on Saturday, 3rd May, from early evening.

Please save the date as this is our biggest event of the year and we would love to celebrate with everyone together!

Further details to follow in due course.

Whilst not necessarily front page news, I was extremely fortunate to have the honour of holding the giant Australian flag for the opening ceremony of the Sydney test at the SCG on 3rd January. You may spot me in the photo below, representing Leichhardt Wanderers Cricket Club of course! It was definitely one of the best views in the house and something I'll never forget!

We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer holidays and are gearing up for the business end of the cricket season! We are also planning another 'Summer Friday BBQ' at Blackmore in February, so watch this space!

As always, if anyone has any questions or issues, please don't hesitate to get in touch: leichhardtcricket@gmail.com
