November 22nd / 23rd, 2025.

What a week of cricket! A two day Ashes test match in Perth left everyone wondering how to pass the time on Sunday. Thankfully there was still plenty of junior cricket to be played (despite some showers)!

This week featured a flurry of new additions to our season Honour Roll across our junior teams. Particularly noteworthy is six new additions to the fielding honour roll - looks like extra catching and fielding practice might be paying off for some? Superb effort, keep it coming!

We also have two players who earned their spot on the honour roll twice in one game! Austin Kelly, (from U15 Black) with our performance of the round (read on below)... and would it be a LWCC newsletter without another appearance from Gus Blackley (U17 Black) in the highlights? (No pressure Gus!).

We also had a fantastic turn out of LWCC juniors at Saturday's WBBL match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades at Drummoyne Oval, which featured our very own Charlotte W (from Stage 3 Girls), who took part in the official bat flip!

Match Reports

U11 Girls Black - LWCC (130) def. Marrickville CC Flaherty (85)

U11 Black took on Marrickville this weekend at Blackmore Oval. They had been searching all season for a win and today it finally came after The helpful guidance of Evelina as Captain.

One of the best bowling and fielding performances of our season meant that the scoreboard favoured Leichhardt after the first innings. Well done to Alexia (3 run-outs!), Annabel and Bonnie who took some amazing wickets. Audrey was unfortunate to have a no ball called on the perfect ball into middle stump.

Our batting was equally impressive and really got us over the line. The running between wickets was exceptional with Lucia and Audrey in the final overs running a marathon between the wickets. Ella and Evelina also proving they had plenty of power with the bat and hitting some impressive shots to the outfield.

A big win to be proud of. Well done girls!

U13 Girls - LWCC (44) def. by Easts CC Dolphins (77)

We lost the toss and Easts elected to bat under cloudy skies at Greenlees Park.

From the start, our bowling and fielding were sharp. Sofia was the pick of the bowlers with 2-12 off 4 overs. But Juno, Hannah, Karthika and Emily all got a wicket and we bowled Easts out for 77. Definitely our best performance of the season.

We went into bat with high hopes of a win. But the Easts bowling was fast, full and straight. Once again, Emily batted through, making a determined and tough 16 not out. But we fell 30 runs short.

S3 Girls - LWCC (94) def. by Easts CC Narwahls (5-139)

A good game of cricket played in an excellent spirit. The team is improving each week, and against a strong batting side there were some great individual results - Aditi 2-19 (2) with a superb caught and bowled and run out; Moo 0-14 (4) with a funny run-out assisted by Zoe - IYKYK ;)

We batted well too and were competitive at the drinks break, Bella top scoring with an impressive 37 (41) and Connie with a solid 11 (14), but we ran out batters just short of posting our first 100 for the season.

Keep it up girls! A win will hopefully come soon. You certainly deserve one.

U9 White - LWCC (67) def. by RHH Pirates (139)

Wanderers came in fresh after a week off and were excited to show off their skills at Monash Oval. Rauiri won the toss for Wanderers, and after carefully consider his options he elected to bowl, presumably to take advantage of the low cloud cover (at least I think that was the theory).

Wanderers bowled exceptionally well, with all bowlers doing their part. A special mention to Eoghan, Rauiri and Tilly who all bowled brilliantly in the middle overs. RHH batted well… But it has to be said that Wanderers assisted them by making some fielding errors on the bumpy outfield, which saw a few ‘shoulda been singles’ turn into 4s and even a few 8s. We will need to do a little bit of work on getting nice and low behind the ball in our ground fielding.

RHH had plenty on the board, but Wanderers took 4 wickets in the last 3 overs to claw their way back into the game. Benji started the fightback by clean bowling a RHH batters to finish a really great spell. Archie then rattled the stumps on the very next ball. The team then took two great run-outs in the last two overs, including Rauiri executing a brilliant run out from behind the stumps, followed by a world class celebration. It was a great period for Wanderers. All in all, RHH had made a big total of 4 for 129.

It was then our turn to bat, and Conor and Archie faced a tough opening spell. Conor’s pull shot gets better every week, and he hit some great boundaries against some very good bowling. Benji and Tilly, and then Asher and Rauiri all batted well without losing a wicket in the middle overs. Asher did particularly well, hitting back to back boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Eoghan and Freddy then closed the innings, in a nice partnership which included Eoghan hitting the only 8 of Wanderers innings.

All in all batting was a bit tough today with some very good bowling mixed with a number of ‘wide-ish’ dot balls… An unexpected positive was that Wanderers finished on 67 (yes… “six seven”…).

Well played Wanderers, and everyone should be proud of how they played, and we look forward to our next match.

U9 Red - LWCC (89) def. Iron Cove Siberian Tigers (71)

It was a close fought game today with the local neighbours Iron Cove Siberian Tigers visiting our home ground at Blackmore Oval for the 8am start.

Ted, our captain for the day was asked to bowl first on a fast outfield. Frankie opened the bowling and was very tidy today conceding 15 runs from his two overs. Ollie was back from injury this week and steaming in once again with his fast left arm pace bowling taking a wicket and conceding 11 runs across his two overs. Mateo also bowled well today to take two wickets and conceding only 7 runs from his two overs. Hudson took a 'Mitchell Starc' screamer of a catch to post his first caught and bowled and ended up with two wickets and conceding only 12 runs from his two overs. Drew continues to steam in like Jeff Thompson and was once again good for his wicket and difficult to bat against, conceding only three runs in total.

Overall LWCC U9 red bowled well to restrict the Siberian Tigers to 56 runs and also taking 6 valuable wickets. Ted, our player of the match, top scored today with 13 runs during his time at the crease including a well-earned 4 to the extra cover boundary. Sam chimed in well again with the bat hitting a 4 on his third ball of the day. Bodhi once again batted well against some difficult bowling from the other team, scoring 8 with the bat and also chiming in once again with a great wicket when bowling.

Overall it went down to the wire in terms of runs but with U9 RED taking three more wickets than the opposition the final score was LWCC U9 Red 89 won against Iron Cove Siberian Tigers on 71. Well done to the team once again with all contributing to a closely fought game played with great spirit by both sides.

U10 White - LWCC (173) def. RH Pirates Pearls (128)

A top of the table clash, against the only team that beat us in the first round. Batting first Reuben and Louis showed how opening batting is done by putting pressure on with quick running, Fred and Ryan came in next with their big hitting. Jake, Andres and Tommie continued the steady run rate in the middle, with Hux and Zane finishing strong to score 113 from batting with only 5 wickets dropped. A great effort!

Bowling was a stand out improvement this week with very few extras and nabbing a total of 15 wickets. Rueben starred with 4 wickets, with Andres and Ryan getting 2 each. Special shout out to Andres for his one handed C&B screamer! There were five run-outs which shows just how good the fielding was this week!

After losing by almost 50 runs in the first round, to turn it into a 45 run win shows how much the team has improved, and how to make a coach very proud. Well done boys!

U10 Red - LWCC (103) def. by Iron Cove Tigers Bengals (111)

Another cracking match for the U10 Red.

It was another exciting morning at the home of cricket for the U10 Red. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Luca wasted no time getting the team going, smashing the very first ball of the day to the boundary and continuing his excellent form, top scoring with 21 from just 13 balls, a proper captain’s knock!

In the middle order, Lucy, Henry, Jack E, and Jude all knuckled down, ran hard, and protected their wickets as our total kept ticking upwards before the mid-innings break. After drinks, our finishers, Jack T, Will, Krish, and Spencer, all looked to lift the scoring rate. We were building nicely until one of the opposition bowlers snuck through with a hat-trick, slowing our momentum late in the innings. Even so, we went into the changeover knowing we had a defendable total.

Our bowling effort was once again very impressive, with only two wides and four no-balls in the entire innings. Jack T led the wicket-taking with figures of 2-11 from three overs, and he combined that with a sharp run out. Will added a wicket and a run out of his own, while Jude opened the bowling and showed how much he’s improving every week. Spencer was difficult to handle as always, Henry swung the ball away beautifully, and both Jack E and Krish troubled the batters with pace and movement throughout.

A huge mention must go to Luca, who held himself back so he could bowl his overs to the opposition’s best batters. Not only did he take them on, but he also kept them to just four runs, an excellent example of leadership and team-first thinking.

Iron Cove ran cleverly between the wickets, and this meant we reached the final over with scores level. Under real pressure, Lucy put her hand up to bowl and produced two half-chances that just didn’t quite carry to our fielders. In the end, it was a narrow loss, our first of the season, but the team can be incredibly proud of how they played.

Player-of-the-Mach went to Luca, who combined top scoring with tight bowling and confident captaincy in a terrific all-round display. On another day, this one would have gone our way, but the coaches and supporters were thrilled with the heart, effort, and teamwork shown by every player.

Well played, team!

U11 Red - LWCC (128) def. by Concord Briars Black (187)

LWCC came up against a strong Concord Briars team, who look on course to make the finals again this year…..

Fielding first, LWCC U11 Red, came up against a strong open pair, who were quick off the mark and even managed two sixes! Their first three batters scoring a total of 77 runs between them. The highlights from the field were Sam with 1 wicket taking out middle stump and a run out from Jeremy with a direct hit side on with one stump to aim at!

LWCC were set their highest target so far with a total of 163. Unfortunately, Concord Briars matched their aggressiveness in batting with velocity in bowling, with MOM Rocky taking 4 wickets to add to his top score of 30! Positives for the team were seeing most of the players getting to double figures, Jeremy (13), Rohan (13), Finn (17), Sam (12) and Archie B top scoring with 26, including 4 boundaries. Our first six of the season is still up for grabs! After the match talk turned to the Ashes and a possible meet up for the dads Sunday night to watch the third day… oh!

We go again…

U11 Gold - LWCC (114) def. by Concord Briars Maroon (117)

With ominous dark clouds hanging over Queen Elizabeth Park, captain for the match Benny H went to the toss with optimism for a win - not to be however, and Briars elected to bat first.

Our bowling was steady but not threatening enough with too many wide's and byes helping the Briars total along. Wasn’t until the 10th over that Golds got their first break through with Harvey B bowling some sharpish deliveries, to force back-to-back run outs - one by Harvey B himself - and then Dorian A from behind the stumps getting in on the act, with a great run out.

Rory P bowled two tidy overs but just lacked a touch of accuracy to threaten the batsman.

The next ten overs saw the boys bounce out of their bowling funk and getting into some tighter deliveries, with Gus CN, Dorian A and Ben T restricting the opposition run rate. Jack B, who has been harsh on himself for some earlier wayward bowling, got a smile on his face when a Briars batter skyed one of his deliveries for a catch to be taken by Dorian A at keeper.

Ben H and Ben T both bowled some more tidy overs to have the Briars scratching for runs and soon Harvey B would strike again with a reflex catch off his own bowling, seems to be a regular occurrence for Harvey B, keep it up! Dorian A took another two wickets, one clean bowled and one with Harvey B again in the action with a clever run-out. Gus CN chimed in with an accurate middle stump delivery which clean bowled the batter. Ben T rounded out our turn in the field with another middle stump flying. Leaving the Briars '8 for' at the half-time break.

A shout out to Rory P, who was sharp behind the stumps in the keeping gloves – preventing additional runs from byes and keeping the pressure on with sharp hands, good work!

Dorian A and Gus CN got off to a shaky start with Dorian showing too much stump to get bowled twice in consecutive overs, although caught out, Dorian did hit back with three powerfully struck fours in his last over faced to balance up the scoresheet. Gus CN, got into the action with a big hit to make it to the boundary and start to get our scoresheet adding up.

Ben H and Ben T came to the crease – to keep the score board ticking over and to keep the scorer’s asking which ‘Ben’ is that one… Ben T had a couple of really nice boundaries, using the pace of the ball to flick some deft leg side fours… Ben H joined in with some good running between the wickets and kept himself ‘not out’ for his innings.

Jack B was bowled out off an absolute peach of a delivery, even the Briars umpire commented that there was no way any batter could hit that ball. The tight bowling continued as Jack B and Harvey B tried to push the score along with a few singles here and there.

The drizzle had really settled in now and the ball was starting to skid into the batsman, making run scoring just that much harder. Rory P with Harvey B rounded out our innings as best they could, with Rory punishing any loose deliveries to the boundary, but two late wickets and too many dot balls left us four runs short of a win. Rory’s work at keeper and his effort with the bat, saw him receive the ‘Player of the Match’ awarded to him from our captain Ben H - well done!

Our first ten overs of bowling lacked venom, and we were just not tight enough to restrict the opposition or upset their rhythm with some wickets. Whilst batting, we failed to hit through the gaps, or look for that extra run here and there, it just meant we could not get ourselves in front and fell short. Fielding was much better though, with players ‘talking more’ and ‘moving in’ with the bowling to put pressure on the batsman, this showed with the increase in ‘run-outs.'

Keep up the effort boys!

U12 Gold - LWCC (19) def. by Concord Briars Green (5-238)

Old sporting heads often say "the league table doesn't lie" - and a quick glance of the U12 League table showed Briars Green top of the table, and U12 Gold at the bottom. A look at Briars' results showed lots of batters scoring runs and then retiring, and a phalanx of bowlers with single figure average. But although we shouldn't have stood a chance on paper - the game is luckily played on grass, not on paper.

We lost the toss, and Briars elected to bat.

Briars showed their class with some powerful boundaries from the first over. Unfortunately, it's a truism that sometimes your best balls are the ones that get punished. But you have to keep running in hard and bowling the balls, and sometimes you get your luck. We kept plugging away, and forced a number of edges, and some loose shots which resulted in dropped catches - some pressure playing off. Still the boys kept trying - and eventually got some rewards. Harry taking a catch off Curtis's bowling for one wicket, and Finley behind the stumps reacting superbly to a thin edge off Elliott's bowling.

However, these wickets didn't stop the flow of runs, and the Briars machine rolled on.

During his first season in organised cricket, Hugo has found the cricket gods savage and cruel, as chances were dropped. However, he showed the value of perseverance - eventually getting his first wicket, and then his second as Harry and Elliot made sure these catches weren't dropped. A late run out, meant we'd taken 5 wickets, although we all also knew a score of 238 would be difficult.

And so it proved, as Briars' and their 5 rep bowlers showed a bowling consistency unusual in U12 cricket. Every bowl was quick and on target, the wicket keeping was perfect to prevent easy byes, and scoring runs proved nearly impossible. Although Harry managed to smack a couple of boundaries, everyone had a ball with their name on it. In the end we ended up scoring 19 - definitely disappointing, but also not surprising - Briars only gave up 32 last week, and 77 the week before.

However, that was back-to-back games against the 2 top teams, and some easier games on the horizon (on paper!), it hopefully means we'll get our chance to get our first win.

Player of the match: Hugo

U12 Red - LWCC (6-112) def. by Concord Briars Black (6-222)

Briars won the toss and elected to bat. Our bowlers today were not a match, for their impressive opening bats, 87* and 70* We tore through the rest of the team when they were retired but the damage was done. In retrospect it was always going to be tough with the night before one of our players Dylan C came home with a cast over his wrist, and our warrior Daniel F unfit to bowl due to a back injury a few weeks back. Compounding our efforts Leo L dragged himself out of his sick bed as he knew we were short a player and short two bowlers. Notwithstanding the adversity, we had some impressive bowling stints. In fact, other than the openers and a retired batter 12* we blasted the rest of the team 6 for 26. Led by John O (3 wickets), impressive spell from Ben S (2 for 21) and Kiran C chipped in with a C&B.

Coming out to bat it was the best fun we ever had with an opposition. With only 7 batters available, it was going to be a difficult chase. A conservative Oscar R dug in to take the shine of the ball and ran himself out for 21 and a fine 34* from Emmett H off 39 balls. Daniel F has the making of a good batter. Playing straight for most of the deliveries.

As some of the boys know each other from the opposing teams, they were giving it to each other with comical enthusiasm. It had the players, the umpires and the parents of both teams in stitches. Great game Briars regardless of the score played with true sportsmanship.

U12 Black - LWCC (32) def. by RHH Pirates Jolly Rogers (2-33)

A short report this week for a very short game!

Things started out well, we welcomed Rufus back after missing a few games with injury, then Noah won the toss and openers Felix and Angus batted through to the end of the 10th over without loss.

But then things took a turn and it was like the English second innings in Perth. Wickets were falling faster than runs were being scored and before we knew it, we were all out.

Felix top scored with 13 and was dismissed for the first time this year, and he and Angus set the example by playing straight and watching the ball.

The Pirates made short work of the total so it was an early finish for all. Onwards and upwards though, the good thing about sport, is there is always next week.

U13 Red - LWCC (94) def. by RHH Pirates Black Beards (6-246)

Twice Cooked with a Grin

Noah channeling ancient Italian Catch-22 wisdom in the face of sweaty rep Pirates thirsting for Play app glory by shouting ‘we’re still cooked, but not quite as cooked!’ at 3-86 in over 11 was a stand out highlight. Clearly a deserving winner of last years’ Team Spirit award. 8-246 sounds scary but not really if you understand that there’s no point fighting to death about ideals. With that chill vibe the Reds produced some great moments - Ollie B’s first ball wicket, Ted's tight spell (2-14 off 4) and Noah’s streak continuing and taking him to top of the comp bowler. Easy as!

Batting was a similar story with highlights being top order madness (or genius) leaving us 4 down pretty quick before Ted - ‘we’ve lost anyway may as well have a bat’ and Ollie ‘Eminem’ joined and started to deal in 4s and take the paint off the Pirates, playing some awesome shots. Ted retired and another mini collapse saw Charlie back at the crease facing his demons. Steve Waugh salvation graced him on this occasion as a cocky pirate dropped the World Cup off an ‘absolute dolly’ leaving Ted to be caught flicking off his pads to finish the match off. Next week is a bye so no training, see all you legends Tuesday week at training :)!

U13 Gold - LWCC (74) def. by Concord Briars Gold (6-264)

Leichhardt Wanderers Gold ran into a powerhouse Concord Briars Gold side on Saturday in what proved to be a tough outing. The opposition batting display was one of the strongest the boys have faced this season, with Concord piling on an imposing 264 from their 30 overs.

Despite the challenge, several Leichhardt bowlers stood tall and continued to compete all afternoon. James D was the standout, finishing with the best figures for the Wanderers. His two wickets were well deserved, beating the bat with guile, and providing multiple unplayable deliveries. Patrick and James A also claimed important wickets, each breaking partnerships when Concord threatened to go into overdrive.

While the total was large, Kasper and Zeb deserve real credit for keeping things tight during their spells. Both showed excellent control and discipline, helping stem the flow of boundaries during key periods. Fielding pressure was highlighted by sharp work from Patrick, Oscar, and Grayson, each contributing to wicket-taking moments through run outs and catches.

Chasing such a formidable total was always going to be difficult, but the Wanderers showed character with the bat. There were stoic innings from Zavier, James D, and Patrick, each retiring or remaining not out after absorbing overs of quality bowling. They showed composure and resilience against one of the strongest attacks the team has faced this season. At the top of the order, Grayson gave the side early momentum with some clean power hitting, striking boundaries and taking on the bowlers with confidence. Lower down, Zeb and Asher kept the scoreboard moving with positive intent, but ultimately the strength and depth of Concord Briars proved too much.

It was a challenging match and Concord Briars Gold were simply too strong on the day. Their batting was exceptional and set a total that was always going to stretch the Wanderers. But there were encouraging signs. James D’s bowling was a highlight, Kasper and Zeb delivered excellent economy and effort, and several players showed real grit with the bat. Plenty to learn from and pride in the fight the boys showed. The Wanderers will bounce back.

U15 Black - LWCC (168) def. Concord Briars Gold (8-132)

“Build the man a statue” - was Mark Howard talking about Scott Boland at the MCG or Austin at Campbell Oval? Who can say?

In a game that was closer than the scoreboard indicates, Austin had a day out, scoring 71* off only 38 balls, had bowling figures of 4-14 (and was 3-0 at one point), and took the catch that ended the game.

However, he had only limited support. Linus was the only other batter reaching double figures, and also took the wicket of one of the opposition’s danger players. Neevan took 3 wickets. Xavier bowled tidily but without luck. Ronav and Flynn both kept well and limited the extras. Also, it was pleasing to see all players hold their nerve in the field as the game got close, to secure the win.

U15 White - LWCC (9-44) def. by Concord Briars Black (0-45)

It was another tough match on the weekend against Concord Briars. Despite the challenge, the team played very well and came close to batting out all 30 overs.

The Whites won the toss and elected to bat. Opening batsmen Max F and Jack F started solidly against their bowlers, but unfortunately Max fell to a good catch in the 3rd over, leaving an opening partnership of 9 runs.

Jack continued on with support from Bowie, Anton, and later Max R, facing some very quick and accurate bowling - a theme throughout the innings - before eventually being run out. Emily then joined Max R at the crease; Max was bowled shortly after and replaced by Jack H. Emily and Jack batted well together, with Jack defending his stumps confidently. After gathering some runs and building a partnership, Emily had to retire injured, and Jack H was caught.

Harry and Hartley were next in. Harry lost his wicket after two overs, leaving Yoris and Hartley at the crease. Hartley batted strongly, scoring 19 before being dismissed. This left Yoris and Charlie to attempt to bat out the remaining overs. However, with only three overs left, the final wicket fell, leaving the team all out for 44.

When the second innings began, the team’s morale remained high. With nothing to lose, they gave it everything. Hartley and Anton opened the bowling with excellent spells; Hartley delivered some accurate balls and came close to taking two wickets, while Anton bowled tightly, conceding only 8 runs from his two overs. Harry and Yoris followed with a strong bowling partnership, keeping the batsmen under pressure with several close appeals.

Despite defending a small total, the fielding effort was outstanding. There were a number of near catches, strong fielding from the whole team, and some brilliant wicketkeeping from Jack F.

Although the result didn’t go our way, the team played with determination, supported each other, and fought right to the end.

Well done, Whites!
